Middle School

Our Middle School curriculum and differentiated instruction are aligned to the Common Core standards. Our classroom environment is designed to include independent work, partnerships, small group work, and conferencing in all subject areas to encourage leadership, responsibility, and growth as the students transition from childhood to adolescence. For Bible instruction, we build upon what was learned in the lower grades and focus on the application and practicing of God’s word in the modern world. Students are challenged to grow and mature in the ways of the Lord while discovering their identity in Christ.

Academics

Our BRCA Middle School ELA curriculum entails a combination of reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Throughout the month students receive instruction in different reading comprehension skills that are applied to the short stories, informational texts, and novels that are read together in class (from the Junior Great Books as well as NYS Progress). These skills are also then practiced at home in an independent reading log that students complete based on a book of their choice. Writing units are comprised of creative writing of short stories, plays, and poems, research papers, persuasive essays, and document-based question essays. Grammar skills are integrated in all subject areas. Each class is equipped with their own library where students are exposed to and immersed in books of different genres with opportunities for independent reading on a daily basis. Students also receive instruction throughout each writing unit and the Vocabulary is comprised from our class texts, as well as the Sadlier curriculum. Comprehension is reinforced in all subject areas ensuring that students are able to navigate throughout every learning experience.

All curriculum including content area subjects (History, Science and Mathematics) are all aligned to Next Generation Learning standards, which in term help students reinforce skills that will help them be successful on NYS Exams. Our classroom environment is designed to include independent work, partnerships and small group work and conferencing. Our instruction in the Arts, Physical Education and Health are all aligned to State Standards as well.

For Bible instruction, we focus on the memorization and application of God’s word. Encouraging students to recognize the Lordship of Christ in all subject areas of learning, and to respond in obedience to God’s call to be transforming influences in society. Through our monthly Bible themes students are challenged to grow and mature in the ways of the Lord. Ultimately, our goal is to equip them in this ever-changing world to be leaders that will one day stand for truth and righteousness.

As a Christian School, Provisionally chartered and incorporated by the NYS Department of Education, and Board of Regents we are mandated to ensure that all curriculum in aligned to State Standards, and furthermore prepares students for State assessments. However, we are still a Christian school and our foundation will always be on God’s word, through Bible integration in all subject areas. With full understanding that equipping students in the spiritual is also a foundation that will guide them in their future endeavors as they infiltrate every profession.
